The Story Behind the Coffee:
Ana Maria's father, Angel Ortega, owned the farm since its inception in 1950, and Ana Maria was born on the farm.
When Ana Maria was just seventeen, both her parents died tragically. She took over the farm, and has been managing ever since. As a host, she is displays this managerial deftness, directing in a supportive yet firm way. She loves nature and flowers. In the city of Huehuetenango, Ana Maria's house is a beautiful garden complete with peacocks. Behind the house is a drying patio and a bodega for her coffees, which she says she has so she can keep an eye on her 'Oro' (she calls her coffee her gold).
Her farm is on the road up to Edwin’s family farm (Finca Vista Hermosa) so we see her a lot and bring roasters out to her farm often.
Los Angeles is her main lot, and Piedra Partida is her higher grown lot, which makes it steeper, harder to pick, and picked last. She also grows select separated lots, like her Maragogype (Which is delicious). Lots include:
- Los Angeles
- Los Angeles Maragogype
- Piedra Partida
